New Laptop

Well I got my new laptop for school today, yay! It is really pretty, it is a powerbook 15 inch. I got 1 gig of Ram in it. It is really pretty and I'm thinking of naming it Dante.

I have installed a couple of programs on it and it is really easy to use which is nice. Everything installed easily and it was a painless process to get it to work. Overall it is a great machine and I'm enjoying playing with it a lot. It should be really useful for school.

I also got 2 of my last 3 books for school today. So only one left to go yay!

Now I'm getting ready for school tomorrow. laundry is done, bags are packed and I just need to make lunch. Hopefully tomorrow will go well and my classes will be interesting.

I have a new Second Cousin

Erin Elizabeth (Ellie) Mee was born August 27th at 1 am, she weighs 7 pounds 1 ounce. Ellie is the first great-grandchild for my grandmother. And the first grandchild for my Mom's older sister. My mom is one of 8 and she is second oldest.

Ellie was born to Emily and Daniel Mee. Daniel is my cousin he is the younger of the two kids in his family, Ellie was named after his older sister and my cousin Erin. Daniel is only 9 months older then me, in fact he is 9 days (I believe) younger then Dan (hubby).

So congratulations on being born Erin Elizabeth Mee I hope you have had a good first 36 hours.

On other family news my Uncle Tim and Aunt Jenna are pregnant with their first child. The baby is due in March, which is a great month to be born if I do say so myself (okay so it is my birth month). Hopefully Jenna will have an easy pregnancy and delivery and I will in a few months get to meet a new cousin.

All these births and expected births kind of make me hope to one day have one of my own. However, I am waiting till I finish getting my bachlors degree. So I guess it will be another 2 and a half to 3 years for me.

Sudoku and Other Book Like Things

Thursday we went to Borders. Dan needed to pick up the next two books in a series he was reading and I'm always up for the bookstore. While we were there I picked up a book with Sudoku puzzles in it. If you don't know what Sudoku is just click on the word and it will link to an explanation. A basic explanation is it is a number puzzle.

Now it may come as a surprise to some of you, (not sure who, but I am sure it will come as a surprise to someone) I like numbers and math and logic. So a number puzzle is right up my alley. I don't like crosswords, just random info to throw in here. I do like logic puzzles and the such and Sudoku is sort of a catagory all its own. I am finding getting the numbers to work in the puzzle is a lot of fun. I need to work on it some so I can go faster on them but it is definately a nice way to spend some time and enrich my mind.

On another note. Two more of my books from Amazon Marketplace have arrive. The best part of this is that the two books include the first book I will need for my history course this semester so I am really glad they have arrived. I am still waiting on three books. One of them I have gotten an e-mail about it shipping, but they shipped media mail, which I'm not a great proponent of because it can take awhile for it to get through. The other two I have not recieved info about shipping, but I am hopefully they will show up soon. One of the ones I am waiting for is my logic book for math and I would like for it to arrive so I have some time to read through and review it. The other two are history books, one of them being a book that sells new for $40 give or take, which I was able to purchase for $4.50. So great savings just need it to arrive now.

Friday we headed back to Borders because we had a coupon for 25% off and I wanted to buy Milton's Paradise Lost. I found a nice copy of it, well two nice copies, but the Penguin Edition was a bit beat up and the hardback edition by some other publisher wasn't. Unfortunately I didn't pick it up because the coupon was for 25% off a cd or dvd. Oops, need to remember to read the fine print next time.

Otherwise, I am still working my way through Dante, I hope to finish The Inferno soon and start on the next book and I should finish all three books by the end of the month. I'll probably start Don Quixote or The Count of Monte Cristo next, but I may just pick up Milton and do him next instead or maybe Chaucer I'll just have to wait and see what I'm in the mood for.

Painting the Kitchen

So we are painting the kitchen this weekend so that at least the base color is down when they finish up the construction in there. We had to decide on a color for the kitchen. The living room is a color called Soft Wine.
softwinejpg.jpg

I really like the color. We needed to find something that would contrast it but not be jarring. We finally decided to go with a green color and chose Sea Scent.
seascentjpg.jpg

We also chose a color called Carolina Strand.
carolinastrandjpg.jpg

We decided to use the Soft Wine and Carolina Strand colors as an accent. We are going to paint the kitchen Sea Scent and then around the top of the kitchen above the cabnets stamp butterflies in both Carolina Strand and Soft Wine. We figure that should help pull the color of the living and dining room through the kitchen.

We thought about using stencils but they are a pain to use and don't look quite right so we found a cute butterfly stamp that was put out by Disney and are going to be using that. I think it should look really cute.

Dan did the first layer of paint this afternoon/evening and it looks really good. There are some spots and it definately needs a second layer of paint, but overall it is a very nice color for the kitchen and should keep it looking open and light.

Dang Custom Picture Frames are Expensive

So Joanne's is having a 60% off sale on framing today. And only today. It happens once a year, according to the lady at the frame counter. We found out about it yesterday when we went to check out stamps and stencils for the kitchen and decided to come back today to see about getting some things framed.

Dan has had his diploma's for the past 6 years or so rolled up and my Mom promised to frame them for him for his graduation present, when we found framing on sale. We also have a gorgeous dragon print that he bought back in 2000 or so at DragonCon that we needed framed. And since I just got my AA we had that diploma as well.

We headed to the store and got to wait in line for about 20 minutes while the people at the counter helped the people in line in front of us. It was then our turn. We started with the Dragon picture. We wanted a fairly nice frame and look for it, because it is a nice piece of art. It took about 30 minutes to finalize what we wanted for it, it will be really nice. Then came the price, let's just say that even at 60% off it was high.

Next we did my diploma went for a simpler look since it was only my AA. The price wasn't too shocking, though it probably would have been cheaper to frame it ourselves. We chose a very nice frame though and it should look good. This took about 15/20 minutes

Last came Dan's Diplomas. He graduated with two Bachlors in 1999, and his Masters in 2001. So he had three Diplomas to frame. After decided that putting all three in one frame would be huge. We decided that we would frame each seperately, but with the exact same look. Since we had been working on framing for a bit Dan had already chosen the frame he liked so it only took about 15 minutes to get everything set up for his.

We then came to the fun part, which is paying. Let me put it this way, I am really really glad that the framing was 60% off. As it is it is costing us more then buying all the books for this semester at the bookstore new. If we were paying full price, well the 15 inch Apple Powerbook is about equivilant.

The frames are really nice and we really needed to frame the things we are framing, but dang I didn't quite realize that an easy way to solve the national debt would be to have everyone pay the price of having a picture framed.

Really Dusty in here

The contractors arrived at 6:45am, yes before any logical person would be awake. And have continued work on the kitchen. Right now the house is really dusty which is a bit annoying. They had to cut a hole in the floor and the ceiling to lay plumbing and electrical wires. Which is nice but the dust is really obvious. Reminding me why I use to hate to go into the home depot by my parents old house.

Other then that they are moving really fast putting in the kitchen and should be finished by this afternoon. Next Wednesday the template person will be out for the countertops and then in two weeks or so after that they'll get to install the countertop, the new sink and facets and the corner cabnet*. And we'll be done, yay!

*The corner cabnet ended up having a crack inside it, so we have to replace it. So that should be arriving sometime next week and they'll install it when they come back out to do the countertop.

Random

Let's see today was fairly quiet. I am so ready for school to start. The long summer off was nice, but I've definately hit my I'm ready to do stuff again point.

The appliance guy arrived at 8am which was way early. They dropped off the stove, microwave and dishwasher. Which was nice though they forgot to include the dishwasher kit oops. We had to go out later to get it. I was downstairs by 9am. Spent most of the day surfing the web wasn't even in the mood for any videogames.

I did read the next two sections in my Math Book. They were fairly interesting. Also read a bit more Dante which was good. Other then that not much else till hubby got home around 6.

We went out to Home Depot and got the piece the guys forgot and then headed to Petsmart and dropped of K's food and such. We then stopped at Target and I got plastic utensils and Eldest. Also picked up dinner.

Headed home and ate dinner then finished clearing out the kitchen so it is now completely empty and ready for the guys tomorrow. Other then that not much else went on this evening. As I said rather boring day. Hopefully some more of my Amazon orders arrive tomorrow.

My Mom is taking my sisters on a cruise

And I don't get to go. I'm really jealous. Apparently my Mom decided to take my two younger sisters on a cruise around the Bahamas. Of course they decided to go the week that University starts for me. So I don't get to go along. I told her I didn't mind missing the first week of class, but she didn't believe me. So while I'm learning about ancient civilizations, writing proofs, and learning about micro and macro economics my mom and sisters are going to be sunning themselves on a big boat as it winds around the Bahamas.

On the plus side she wants to do a girl only vacation again next year and she promised to make sure it occured while none of us are in school etc, so hopefully I'll get to at least go to that.

My first textbook arrived

Well I have to say I'm fairly impressed so far with Amazon's marketplace. On Friday I ordered books I need for the upcoming semester. Today the first one arrived. It was my most important book. My math book, and it is in great condition. Now I just need to wait on the other 8 books I have ordered. It was definately a nice experience though to get it so fast.

I went through and read the first section and it is basic logic so fairly interesting. I plan to finish reading through the first chapter before classes start so I'm ready to go next Wednesday.

Weird things about me

On a messageboard I visit there was a post about weird and strange things about you and that you do. I figured it was an interesting post so I'm going to transfer my answers here plus add a few more.

I am still afraid of monsters in my closet when it gets dark at night and I'm alone in the house.

I bite my nails (not sure this is really that strange or weird)

I collect dice

I almost always read a book from start to finish without a break (only textbooks and some history books have not been read this way).

I tend to read fast, really fast, but I still remember everything in the book.

I read books more then once, in fact I read most books more then 10 times.

I read at least a book a day.

I love doing mental math.

When I'm bored I'll doodle Calculus Equations.

I hate driving, I can drive and will if needed, but if I have the choice, I will always let someone else drive (except my brother, his driving scares me).

When I eat out I always tip too much, I figure a 25% tip is a good tip if I get good service.

I hate calling anyone on the phone, I don't mind answering the phone, but I won't actually call anyone but my husband and my parents.

I plan to be a stay at home mother once I have kids. I also plan to homeschool them and teach them Latin, Greek, Hebrew, Hindi and Spanish. Latin, Greek and Hebrew will begin being taught before they are 7.

I am attempting to become fluent in Hebrew and am planning to take Hebrew at school for the next 4 semesters.

I love to travel if I had the money I would travel year round and visit every country at least once.

I don't watch TV, I haven't watched TV, except on vacations in over 5 years (we don't have cable and I only watch dvds). However even when I do watch TV on DVDs the only TV shows I watch are Law and Order and Dead Like Me.

I love everything Disney, and own almost all the Disney movies on DVD except for the straight to DVD sequels and Pochohantus (spelling off, the history was too bad for me to actually want to see this movie).

I enjoy reading math textbooks in my spare time.

I sleep with 4 pillows, two under my head, one for my legs and one to snuggle with.

I have a hard time sleeping if the room is not pitch black and if there is any noise.

I hate chatspeak and 133tspeak, I can understand it, but it drives me crazy when people use it.

I collect socks. Everytime I go to Target if I pass the sock section I'll buy a new pair of socks.

I sort my M&Ms and Reeces Pieces by color before I eat them. Unless they are on icecream.

If I sleep on my left side I have to sleep with my arm under my head. If I sleep on my right side I can't sleep with my arm under my head.

I hate getting shots or blood drawn, I hate the needle that is. Once it is in I love watching the blood flow out of my body.

I can not sit still without fidgiting. I normally try to keep something around that I can play with in my hands, but if nothing is around I'll tap my fingers and shake my legs.

Okay now that I've scared you all away from my blog, I promise that most of my idiosyncrasies don't appear in public.

Started Reading Dante

Well today I started reading my copy of The Divine Comedy that I picked up yesterday. I really like how this book is layed out. The intro and notes from the translator aren't that important to me, but they do have decent information included within them. I sort of skimmed through the first 25 pages or which included the intro and the translators notes. Mainly because I wanted to actually read the verse of the story not the notes.

The translation seems well done, since I don't read italian, though it might be nice to learn to read it I cant' say how well the author did in translating. I like how they have a summery of the canto at the start of each canto (chapter but it is a poem and I'm not sure poems really have chapters). The first 130 lines or so flowed well and were very interesting to read I really enjoyed them and think I will enjoy reading through all three books in The Divine Comedy.

I also continued to read The People's History of the United States. I am really enjoying this book, I am taking it slow which is odd for me. I'm only reading a chapter or so a day so I have time to think on it. I find that it is really interesting reading about American History from a different view then what is given in most history books. The first chapter about how Columbus and the other explorers of the New World brought genocide upon the Native Americans already living here was really interesting to read and it was a point that is often glossed over in more traditional texts. I am through the formation of the United States and the creation of the Constitution and I am looking forward to reading more of the book and seeing the my countries history through a new lens.

New Kitchen coming soon!

So the house right now is really cluttered, more then the normal clutter. Because for the past two weeks we have had all the cabnets for our new kitchen sitting in the diningroom. On Wednesday they are finally going to be moved, okay they might not be moved till Friday, but on Wednesday the contractor is finally coming to install them. It is going to be so nice. We are basically doubling the amount of counter space and storage space we have. At the moment we have one countertop we can really prepare things on. We are adding an entire wall of cabnets with the remodel which will be so nice. We have also bought all new appliances, except for the fridge.

When we first moved in 3 years ago the back burner of the stove didn't work. Since the kitchen was from the 70s when the house was built we figured we would just wait till we redid the kitchen. However, it has been a pain for the past three years cooking without that burner, because it was the second big burner. We are finally getting a new stove with the remodel though, and it is a really nice one. It is one of the flat surface tops that they now make, and it also has two ovens, a small one perfect sized for bread or desert or baked veggie dishes and a full sized oven which is good for everything else. This will make life a lot easier when we need to cook two things at the same time at different temperatures.

The house is going to feel even more crowded this week though since the new appliances arrive on Tuesday. However, by Friday everything but the laminate countertop will be installed. Then we just have to have the countertop measured and they will make it and install it, so within a month we should have a brand new kitchen.

It is going to be such a nice change, we are going from an ugly dark 1970s wood color to a light honey maple color. It should help lighten up the room a ton. Of course we still have a bit more stuff to do before the contractor arrives, light take off the ugly dark colored wall paper border that was in the kitchen and finish packing away the rest of the dishes. We are on our way to a new kitchen though and I am so ready for it.

First Entry

Welcome to my blog. Not that anyone really knows about it yet. This is a place for me to type out frustrations, updates on my life or just general randomess. I am proud to say I have finally finished organizing the site, I think it looks good now and I think I like the color scheme at least so far. We'll see how I feel about it tomorrow. Other then that welcome to my new blog. No promises about how often I'll update, I might update entries 2 times a day or I may go months without an entry, who knows. Anyways here goes nothing.
